The task
Selection of the film excerpt to be the basis of the listening task could be done either by the teacher or by the students. From a class management point of view, it might be advisable to limit the number of different films/excerpts to be analysed.
Students could be given the A list of suggested viewing (doc,39kb) from which to make their selection, or other films could be used by students in negotiation with the teacher, bearing in mind Departmental policy and Film Classification guidelines. A discussion of Film Classification guidelines may be advisable. G or PG classifications are generally acceptable.
Revisit the Student instructions (doc,16kb) in some detail to ensure that students understand the task. Specify the amount of time that students will have in order to prepare for each component of the task and make sure that they know when they will be required to make their oral presentations and/or their performances. It may be, depending on resources and facilities, that some of this preparation will have to take place out of class, but it is desirable that some of the preparation takes place in class so that teachers can provide feedback to the students.
Although the listening component of the task can be undertaken in pairs or groups, each student should be assessed separately and they should therefore make certain that they participate actively in the oral presentation and be prepared to answer clarifying questions put to them by the teacher. Teachers might advise students to make certain that they take responsibility for discussion of at least one film excerpt, for example.
Extra musical information (eg film history, biographical details of composer/performer etc) is not required in the Listening presentation.
The composition component of the task will be a group assessment. Teachers could involve students in peer assessment by asking them to assess the performance of each of the groups.
